Welspun Energy works towards healthier villages in Madhya Pradesh
~ A holistic approach through improvement of health infrastructure, medical camps and awareness camps~

December 05, 2013: Welspun Energy Ltd. (WEL), India’s leading renewable energy generator has been conducting healthcare initiatives across Madhya Pradesh for over three years. These initiatives are aligned to WEL’s vision of lighting up lives of communities around its area of operations. Through its initiatives, Welspun Energy has positively impacted the lives of nearly 14,000 people from villages in MP.
When we had ventured into these villages for the first time, we found a need gap in access to adequate medical facilities. Child mortality rate for instance was high and cases of malnutrition were commonly found. Instead of qualified doctors, the villagers visited quacks to undergo treatment. In case of emergencies they had to travel minimum six to eleven kilometers for medical attention. Due to water clogging and inadequate basic sanitation practices diseases were commonly prevalent.
Shrimati Amasiya Pao, Sarpanch, Umardha village said, “Welspun Energy has helped us realize the importance of hygiene and healthy living. We now have access to healthcare services and a Doctor now visits us every day in our own village. We no longer have to travel long distances for treatment. In case of emergencies, the ambulance facility enables us in timely transport of the patient to the nearest hospital. Our lifestyle has improved and especially our women and children are benefitting from the initiatives conducted by Welspun Energy.”
Speaking on the initiatives, Mr. Vineet Mittal, Managing Director, Welspun Energy Ltd. said, “We have seen that awareness of sanitation, regular health checkups and timely medical attention are not easily accessible to many a villagers. In most of these locations lack of proper awareness had led to spread of malnutrition, diseases, and prolonged illnesses which have resulted in increasing financial burdens. We have embraced this opportunity and set out on establishing a series of Medicare centres, storage spaces for medicines and in-patient treatment facilities.”
Healthcare initiatives by Welspun Energy
Improving Healthcare Infrastructure: WEL realized that there is lack of medical infrastructure at villages and set out on conducting a series of initiatives to provide best healthcare services possible to the villagers.
- Medical Camps & Care Centre - Primary health care centres were set up in order to make genuine healthcare available to villagers. Out Patient Department health services are provided at villager’s doorstep through Medicare centres located in villages across Madhya Pradesh. Services at the centre include immunization of children & women, Ante- Natal & Post-Natal care, pathology services, registration (marriage, pregnancy, birth & death) & referral services.
- Mobile Health Care - There was a lacuna in timely medical aid in the villages and WEL bridged this gap by making mobile healthcare facilities available. Welspun Energy, in association with the government organized ‘Life Line Express’- a mobile health care initiative, wherein a total of 334 cases were brought in for treatment from different villages.
- Ambulance Facility - An ambulance facility was started owing to the fact that a number of villagers could not travel to the centre due to health issues. Patients are transported from their homes to the Medicare Centre and critically ill patients are driven to a hospital covering a journey of around 30-35 Kilo meters.
- Community Health Centre (CHC) - The CHC, a government health setup attends to patients with seasonal & general diseases from 52 villages. Since 27th November 2011, WEL started providing full fledged assistance to the CHC and helped examine and treat over 7,000 patients.
- Polio Camp - Through surveys, WEL observed that the villages around company’s projects had many infants and new-born babies. The local team at the project site tied up with the Government Health Department and organized a Polio camp involving a door to door campaign, which ensured that all children (0-5 years old) of nearby villages were covered.
Healthy Baby Competition: During the health camps WEL observed that most of the infants and children in villages were malnourished and their mothers were unaware of the importance of nutrition. To avert this situation, Welspun Energy conducted a ‘Healthy Baby’ competition involving children and winners were given attractive rewards. Over a period of time checkups revealed improvement in health of these children and rise in awareness about need for nutrition among women.
Awareness Camps: Welspun Energy conducted ‘Hand-washing Day’to create awareness among the villagers about the importance of washing hands with soap as a key approach to disease prevention. Around 400 students in the age groups of 5 to 15 years from various government schools participated in the event. A ‘World No Tobacco Day’ was observed wherein, villagers convened at various districts in Madhya Pradesh to learn about the harmful effects of using tobacco products.
