(Free Press Release) Wandering Pilgrims - Indira‘s Musical journey with the Mystics !

Mumbai, 13th April, 2011 : Wandering Pilgrims, ´a musical journey with the mystics” was presented by reputed singer Indira Naik on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at the Sophia Bhabha Auditorium.

Indira‘s, Wandering Pilgrims- the musical show, sets new horizons for Sufi singing combined with dialogues and dance that simplifies the mystical essence of Sufi and the philosophy of the poets to the common man.

The musical show saluted legendary poets like Rumi, Bulle Shah, Kabir, Mirabai, Jigar Muradabadi and other poetry taking it beyond its traditional audience and onto the Global music stage.

Essentially, Indira‘s style of Singing has been based on classical compositions with ornamental intricacies of Patiala Gayaki. However, since the last five years she has been singing Sufi tracks in her concerts combined with Ghazals.

Yet, Wandering Pilgrims becomes the first of its kind musical show that is the ´theatrical expression of Sufi poetry combined with Dervish dancing‘.

Sufi concerts have been happening all over in India and abroad but it was for the first time, music lovers witnessed the essence of Sufi poetry through theatrical elements of dance and drama. A special rendition of Persian poetry in Indira‘s unique earthy & sensual style, evoked images of contemporary grace coupled with old world mysticism.

One of the couplets rendered by Indira in the musical show, called ´Na Man Behuda‘ (by Rumi) has also been rendered by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Indira Naik... the Singer & Composer‘s journey so far !

Since the tender age of 11, Indira has been Classically trained in the Patiala Gayaki, and her music has always been a tribute to age old traditions set against the backdrop of Modern times.

Indira has not only built a formidable reputation for herself in India but has also achieved monumental success abroad too, enthralling audiences with live renditions the world over including the U.S., the UK, Portugal and Brunei.

In 2007, she composed & released her Album ´Tasavvur‘ on the Ghazals of Himayat Ali Shayer. Wandering Pilgrims also has been composed by her & directed by Asif Basra.

She continues her intense riyaaz under the tutelage of her present Guru Shri Pandit Dayal Thakur.

Indira‘s talent and her ability to apply her music to an unexpected genre, has very much been her strength as well as part of her own evolving process.

Speaking on the occasion, Indira Naik commented, “Wandering Pilgrims in a Sufi setting will re-affirm our faith in the quest of the miraculous. It attempts to awaken the audience to the spiritual. The contexts in the dialogues of the show are of ´here and now‘ which most of us can identify with, yet the musical show serves as a gentle reminder of the depth of our hidden journeys.

It has always been my ardent desire to re-open the gates of spiritualism within us through this genre and hence I am planning to carry the concert to other cities too.

Wandering pilgrims, Mumbai concert, is just one step ahead towards this aim.”
