Tata Steel Organizes Aquaculture Training at Gopalpur

For boosting productivity of the fish farmers around Tata Steel’s Gopalpur Project, a capacity building programme on ‘Sustainable Freshwater Aquaculture’ was organised by the steel major at Regional Institute for Training on Extension, Rangeilunda under Chhatrapur block of Ganjam district. The training programme, organised in coordination with Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) and College of Fisheries (OUAT), Rangeilunda was conducted in three phases. The programme included modules on valuable information on best practices for Fresh Water Aquaculture, Packaging and Transportation of Fish and Fish Seed. Apart from classroom teaching, the participants were taken for an exposure visit to two commercial aquaculture farms in Chhatrapur and Purusottampur blocks to see how successful farmers use latest technology and expert knowledge to gain maximum profit. Appreciating Tata Steel’s endeavours for income enhancing activities through such properly articulated livelihood options, the Director, College of Fisheries, Rangeilunda who was present during the inaugural session of the training, appealed to the farmers to make the best use of the programme and implement it. Reiterating about Tata Steel’s commitment towards socio-economic development of the region, Mr. Sushanta Mishra, Chief, Project Gopalpur & SEZ Tata Steel said that Tata Steel will always support the people of the area in various livelihood opportunities and organise similar programmes in future. During the technical sessions important aspects like water treatment, right frequency and appropriate time for fish feeds and identifying symptoms of diseases with remedial course of action were elaborately deliberated upon along with answering queries raised during open discussion.
