Survive-a-Storm Shelters has been fielding calls recently from county emergency managers throughout Tornado Alley. According to company spokesman Matt Williams, “We have seen a definite rise in interest surrounding our underground community storm shelters. There are very few companies in the United States that have the ability to construct large underground storm shelters, and Survive-a-Storm Shelters is ideally positioned to meet this need.”
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), there have been 536 deaths from tornadoes in the United States this year, making it the deadliest tornado season since 1936—making it the 6th deadliest tornado season in U.S. history. According to NOAA there have been 1,475 tornadoes so far this year. The overall yearly average number of tornadoes for the past decade is 1,274.
Whatever the cause for this increase in tornado activity, emergency managers have begun to reassess their preparedness for tornadoes, and many communities have come to the conclusion that they must take steps to increase their sheltering capacity. FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program is helping these communities to become better prepared providing funding assistance to qualified programs.
