Orlando, FL — February 29, 2015 — Knee injury is one of the accidents that most people are prone to. However, athletes and the aging population are believed to be more susceptible to experiencing it. The good news is that there are some prevention techniques believed to be helpful to individuals who usually experience such an injury.

A study reveals the power of the mind to reduce the risk of knee injury.  Injuries can take some time to heal, and they can even hinder sufferers from doing their daily routines of working.

In a 2009 study, it was found that the mind has the potential ability to prevent knee injury. Researchers believe that the brain can control body movements quickly and prevent injuries.

In a study published by the Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, the participants were made to perform squats using one leg until it becomes shaky and tired. The study was conducted by the researchers from the University of Michigan.

The researchers aimed at determining the effects of tired and wobbly leg muscles. Athletes are more susceptible to shakiness and tiredness due to their intense physical activity, and thus, they are more at risk of injuries.

The researchers assessed the response that participants made to various movement commands such as jumping. It was found that their legs experienced a response reduction, which can lead to anterior cruciate ligament or ACL injury.

The ACL is one of the four major ligaments that support the knee joint. Unfortunately, ACL injuries could eventually lead to increased risk of knee osteoarthritis.

Scott McClean, PhD, assistant professor and lead researcher from the Michigan’s School of Kinesiology, believes that the brain has the potential to influence the activities or movements of both legs.

In a study, only one leg was subjected to fatigue but in the end, both legs became weary. This could mean that the brain is the root cause of the feeling of weariness.

Dr. McClean also added that the brain may also be too tired to send the right message and it ends up telling the relaxed leg that it is also tired. The good news is that many scientists are conducting studies to develop prevention techniques that strengthens the muscles and support the knee joint.

There are various measures available that are thought to help strengthen the knee joint, and one is using glucosamine supplements. Glucosamine is a naturally-occurring substance in the body and is thought to repair joint cartilage.

The most preferred glucosamine supplements are those that contain methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), which is thought to fight pain and inflammation (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Supplement-2000mg-serving/dp/B0126ZF0B0).
