Some businesses must have a local audience, so not all business owners are interested in establishing an online business today. Many service oriented businesses demand a local consumer base. There are some things that are very difficult if not impossible to box up and ship out. Some other business owners choose to work locally, rather than extending out nationally or internationally on the Internet. While all of these business owners will aim to reach customers in their local geographical areas, they all have a need for Internet promotions.

Do you run your own business? Have you started to create your online presence so you can keep your share of the local market? You have a lot to ponder when deciding how to dish out your marketing budget, but there are some things to keep in the front of your mind:

1. Unless you are marketing online at this moment, you are probably giving up customers to at least some of your local competition.

You want to do much more with your marketing efforts than advertise your newest products. It is about convincing consumers that your products and/or services are better than that of your competitors for given reasons. No matter what line of work you may be in, there are other businesses in the field creating their presence online already. If you don't believe your competitors are already online, do a Google or Yahoo search for some of their names. You will likely be surprised how many have their own web pages and are being talked about on Facebook. They are establishing their online presence to reach customers you may not have access to if you are not already marketing online as well.

2. Customers in your local area go online searching for information, products and services every single day.

Millions of people go online on a routine basis, and it is no longer just to locate basic information. Many of these online visitors are spending money online. Many people are also looking for local businesses online to help with their shopping decisions. If someone goes online and starts searching for local businesses in your field of work today, are they going to find your business or a competitor?

3. You are not required to sell products through the Internet to market online.

This is the point that gets many local businesses uncertain of the facts. So many business professionals think that you must sell online and ship packages out to make use of Internet marketing. This is absolutely untrue. So many local businesses are finding that their customers go online to find ways to contact them. Many customers do not expect to purchase your products online, but they will search for basic contact information or to find out where you are located and what you have to offer. If you are not online to take care of these customers, you can assure a few of your competitors will be there eager to greet them. They will take to whoever gives them the information they are looking for when they are searching for it.

4. You don't have to concentrate your entire marketing plan on the Internet.

Since your business is based on local consumers, you do not want to confine yourself to Internet marketing. You just need to cover all bases so you are available online for those local shoppers who do go searching for businesses in that manner. Your online presence will become far more valuable as this movement toward online advertising continues.

5. Clients are now using business reviews as a research tool to decide where to put their money.

It is not as simple as taking out an ad in a local paper anymore, since a growing number of consumers are making decisions on high cost investments through the Internet. Money is too hard to gain today to give away to just anyone, so most people are carefully choosing where they spend their dollars. Reviews left to the benefit of your business will convince other future customers to give your service a chance, so encourage those reviews with your most valued clients.

6. You do not have to spend tons of money on your online marketing plans or promotions.

Your online presence does not have to cost you a lot of the budget. There are many things you can do to promote your business online for a small cost, but you have to be willing to dedicate a bit of time. Social marketing is a good place to start.

The best way to let everyone know that you have the best products, services and price points is to start spreading the word online. There are people you have not yet met in your local community, and many of them are online.
