Shreyansh Mehta, from Varnasi bags the 2nd position at the National level BrainCafé Budding Scientist Contest 2012

 

  • 49 students from across India had made it to the finale of BrainCafé Budding Scientist Contest 2012 - A national level hunt for scientific talent for students
  • The National level competition witnessed participation from states across Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and NCR
  • Mr. Subhash Chandra, Chairman, Essel Group attended the event to encourage and applaud the innovative projects presented by the students

 

Varnasi: Shreyansh Mehta, a student from Aryan International School, Varanasi, bagged the second position at the finale of the ‘BrainCafé Budding Scientist Contest 2012’. BrainCafe Budding Scientist Contest is a national level hunt for scientific talent for students. A total of 49 students ranging from standard 1st to 8th showcased their innovative projects at the grand finale held in Mumbai on Sunday. Dignitaries present at the event were Mr. Subhash Chandra, Chairman, Essel Group, Santosh Mishra, Secretary of Board of Secondary Education, Madhya Pradesh, Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Chairman, Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre and Mr. Fukuzumi, CEO, Gakken Educational from Japan.

Participants were divided into four categories; Category A (Standard 1st — 2nd), Category B (standard 3rd — 4th), Category C (standard 5th — 6th) and Category D (standard 7th — 8th). Shreyansh Mehta from std 1, presented a project on Lava Lamp. His project was a description of Gas produced through fizzling tablets.

Giving a brief about the project, Shreyansh Mehta said, “My project is about Lava Lamp. Lava lamps are interesting and cool. Have you ever wanted to make your own lava lamp? Lava lamps that you buy use high heat and toxic chemicals, but you can make a lava lamp at home using safe kitchen ingredients”

Other students who bagged the first position in other categories include: Aarcha Bijju Menon (Category B, std III) from Prime Academy, Mumbai; Riddhi Nirmal Chhajad( Category C STDVI) , Swami Vivekanand International School, Panwar;  S Santhi(Category D VIII) from Mount Litera Zee School, Hayath Nagar.

The second year of BrainCafé Budding Scientist Contest 2012 was an innovation anthology, with projects ranging from disaster management techniques, lifting water without electricity, creating light house, and energy and water conservation.

The final contest was judged by an esteemed panel of professionals which included Mr. Arvind Paranjpye, Director of Nehru Planetarium, Mr. Achyut Godbole, MD, Softexcel Consultancy Services and Mr. Mahendra D. Khandkar, Associate Professor in Physics, Pillai Institute of Information Technology (PIIT).

The evaluation parameters included: Uniqueness of the idea (how different / innovative is the project from others), application of the concept used or scientific principle behind the model, types of material used (encouraging simplicity of material).

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Subhash Chandra, Chairman, Essel Group exhorted parents to actively encourage curiosity in children and support the development scientific temper — a necessary ingredient for success in any field. “These children will lead the future of our country. The kind of learning that is taking place in our schools will pave the way for a better future. We are certain that in future, we will witness the emergence of several innovative scientists in our country. It is a process we have started with BrainCafe. We believe that BrainCafe should be applicable in every school.”

Applauding the efforts and innovations presented by the students, Mr. Navneet Anhal, Chief Operating Officer, Zee Learn said commented, “It is amazing to see such talent growing in India. The innovations displayed by these young minds portray a bright and shinning future for India. It gives me great pleasure to witness and be part of an event such as this. We must encourage and support the budding scientists of India and BrainCafé Budding Scientist Contest is one such step towards it.”

BrainCafé Budding Scientist Contest is a hunt that discovers the future scientist from across the country. In its second year of the hunt students showcased their scientific quotient through their innovative projects.  

Sharing his thoughts on the objective of conducting BrainCafé Budding Scientist Contest, Mr. Aman Pal Singh, Business Head, BrainCafé said, “The second year of BrainCafé Budding Scientist Contest has received a tremendous response from all schools and students with this year over 9000 students participating in the contest. We are happy to be a medium to encourage and appreciate the scientific bent of minds of students in India. We at BrainCafé aim to unlock a child’s learning potential through the route of science that enables to develop Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). Being one of India’s largest annual science competitions, the BrainCafé Budding Scientist Contest provides students a unique platform to showcase their ability to apply scientific principles for creating working models. Over 9000 students from across India are participating in the contest this year.
