Woods Hole, MA, June 17 — Sea Education Association (http://www.sea.edu) offers a large number of study abroad programs about the world’s oceans through their accredited off- campus program, SEA Semester. During each SEA Semester program, undergraduates from colleges and universities around the United States and often the world learn about all aspects of the global ocean from oceanography and maritime history, to culture, environment, public policy and nautical science. A variety of semester and summer programs are offered each year.

SEA Semester: Oceans & Climate is one such offering that will run in Fall 2013 and Spring 2014. A research intensive semester, Oceans & Climate looks at how oceans affect the global climate system. This study abroad semester which includes a 3,000 mile research cruise across the Pacific Ocean, allows students to study the remote open ocean through directed research projects. The program begins with a six-week on-shore program in Woods Hole to prepare students for the 6-week research voyage at sea.

During the study at sea portion of the semester, students are full working members of the scientific team and sailing crew aboard one of SEA’s two brigantine sailing research vessels, the SSV Robert C. Seamans. During the study on ship sea component, students deploy oceanographic sampling equipment, manage shipboard operations, navigate by the stars and visit remote island ports including Tahiti, the Marquesas Islands, and Hawaii. The students also conduct an independent research project related to climate change and implement their experimental design, analyze the data they collect and present their findings.

SEA Semester: Oceans & Climate takes place from September 23 to December 20, 2013 and February 4 to May 2, 2014 with both tracks making an Equatorial crossing and stops at the Marquesas Islands. The program is ideal for upper-level undergraduates who have taken three lab science courses with one being at the 300 level or higher. For more information visit http://www.sea.edu.
