(Free Press Release) Reportaaz presents Sattetlya Karbharni: saluting exemplary women in rural politics only on IBN-Lokmat.

Pune, January 29th 2012: With a view to empowering women, the Maharashtra government passed a bill last April, which enhanced the reservation for women to 50 per cent from 33 per cent. Before this historic bill was passed, there have been several women who have had to face hardships in grassroot level politics. This week‘s Reportaaz brings to you the remarkable success story of these women from rural Maharashtra at 11.30 am and 8:30 pm on Sunday, 29th January only on IBN-Lokmat.

The word "panchayat" is a traditional one, referring to the five elders in a village who mediated conflict and spoke on behalf of all the residents of a village in pre-modern times. In these traditional bodies, the lower castes—and women—had no representation. But new changes in the system lead to positive changes in the administration. It gave women an opportunity to prove their capabilities in governance. The confidence they inspired in their constituency encouraged more women to enter the political arena. On the other hand, decision making for the community and the exercise of political powers is still regarded as an exclusive male preserve. This is clear from the entirely male composition of the traditional panchayats, either of villages or of caste groups.

There are few exemplary women who have broken the barriers and created a landmark in the history of Panchayati Raj in India. IBN Lokmat interviewed these special game-changers in politics who went from Sarpanch to Zilla Parishad Adhyaksh and Nagarsevak to Mahapaur. Their inspiring stories tell us about their struggle, development, satisfaction, pride and acceptance in society.

This motivating episode will bring to you the success story of these extraordinary women. To know more tune into Reportaaz at 11:30 am and 8:30 pm on Sunday, 29th January 2012 only on IBN-Lokmat.
