The Maratha Light Infantry is one of the oldest regiments of the Indian Army. The Regimental Centre of the Regiment is located at Belgaum, in Karnataka State. There were 30 battalions of the 5th Maratha Light Infantry in World War II.  In 1947 five battalions were allotted to India. The Maratha Light Infantry of the present Indian Army has at various times had 22 battalions. Since then this regiment has served the East Indian Company to safeguard them. Namdev Jadav a warrior from Ahmednagar district and Yashwant Ghadge from Raigadh district were one of the brave soldiers in Maratha Battalion. They were the only Indians who were also awarded with the “Victory Cross”.

Since Independence, battalions of the Maratha have taken part in every armed conflict. All the battalions now represent one single battalion.
