You know the saying that you cannot fool or mess with Mother Nature, and the same applies to marketing principles because they are the building blocks of business. The roughly hundred years of business preceding the web allowed people to discover marketing methods that are at the core of all business. All of this is fairly easy to understand, and it just consisted of looking at how people behave and using that as a basis for developing techniques.

So you can see what can happen if you go forth trying to make money without having any clue. Perhaps that is why millions of them have not survived for long, but that can always be turned around if you want it to be.

Even if your IM journey is still in its infancy, you should create at least a basic business and marketing plan for yourself. It doesn't matter if you've created a product of your own or are an affiliate marketer. Having a marketing plan is a good idea because it can offer you direction, clarity and help you keep your purpose clear. Figure out how you want to promote your product and then outline everything you want to do. It's good to use for planning out your whole year, to document it and to use it for setting goals and timetables and milestones that you are going to try to reach. That is a fundamentally necessary part of a serious business, and all major corporations do that. All right, so you have at least one product to sell but you don't know a lot about the market or the people in it. There are questions about who your customers are and it is very critical that you answer them as specifically as you are able to. Where a market audience's approaches and preferences are concerned there is often quite a lot of overlap. Proper communication is really important here because you cannot use the same approach with every market. It all sounds like a hassle but it's necessary if you want all of your marketing and advertising to be effective.

Email marketing is really where this idea of segmentation comes from, and it can be used to great effect. This is really not new, but it is something that many people do not know about. Take your list and analyze who has bought from you and put them aside. At that point you create a new campaign directed to those who have bought from you, and you promote different products. Ideally, you want to promote products that cost more, and you just apply the marketing ladder. At the point where people buy more expensive products, then you naturally segment them out to the appropriate list.

Hopefully you can see the importance of gaining a solid understanding of core marketing principles. The solution for you is simple, and only you can decide if you will address that solution or not. Even if you have been doing this for a while, it is smart to continue adding to your knowledge base. To ignore these warnings is simply taking a risk that you really do not need to take. However, that can often be the best teacher, then it may come down to testing your resolve and ability to motivate yourself to keep going.
