The National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) is a project undertaken by the government of India to address the health needs of underserved rural areas. The program was chalked out in April 2005 as part of the 11th five year plan. The NRHM was initially tasked with addressing the health needs of 18 states that had been identified as having weak public health indicators. One of the main objectives of the NHRM was to provide effective health care to the rural population and the disadvantaged groups including women and children. The NHRM scheme was initiated due to many systemic flaws in the health system namely, the lack of a holistic approach, immense shortage of infrastructure and human resources, lack of accountability, inadequate sensitivity to community needs and lack of financial resources. Many states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim and Tripura were brought under the NHRM scheme.

Some of the main features and objectives of the NHRM were communisation i.e. to achieve better community participation, undertake initiatives and form various committees and organisations at the village, block and district levels of each state. Also provide flexible financing, better quality of health services and human resource development in rural areas.

IBN-Lokmat willvisit different regions and talk to people about their experience, their take on the NHRM Program andhow has it benefited them. Watch Janatecha Jahirnama only on IBN-Lokmat this Wednesday 2nd of April at 7.30 pm and following day at 11.30am.
