Orlando, FL — April 14, 2015 — Pain is often a normal consequence of having arthritis. This condition not only causes pain, but it also hinders people from doing the routines they normally do on a daily basis. However, it seems that there is good news that awaits arthritis patients.

A new study showed that excess pounds can cause pain, and this means that this pain may be reduced by decreasing or managing weight. There are many reasons why people suffer from pain and obesity, and being overweight is one of the key factors.

“The Arthritis Foundation has stated on its website that people who carry more weight are more likely to suffer from greater pain. It even revealed  facts about a study which found that obese people were more than 2.5 times more likely to experience pain than those who have normal a BMI, or body mass index,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.

Joan E. Broderick, PhD, and Arthur A. Stone, PhD, are professors of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science in Stony Brook. They have stated that the association of pain and BMI was steeper for females than males and for individuals older than 40 years of age.

The Gallup Organization’s researchers conducted a survey that involved more than one million people. They made telephone interviews asking questions such as whether or not the participants experienced a lot of pain in the previous day. Such a question allows people to recall information without bias.

It was found that overweight individuals whose BMI was between 25 and 30, reported pain that was 20 percent higher than those who had a BMI of 25 or less. People with a BMI between 30 and 35 experienced 68 percent higher rates of pain. Furthermore, those who had a BMI between 35 and 40 had a 136 percent higher pain rate.

According to the two professors, obese people don’t have to suffer from chronic conditions such as arthritis in order to experience pain. Their excess weight is enough to cause their pain. However, there were also researchers who discussed the association between chronic pain conditions, such as arthritis, and pain. Stone and Broderick also stated that individuals who are suffering from debilitating conditions are less likely to engage in physical activity and this makes them more susceptible to weight gain or obesity.

There are many arthritis patients who want to achieve pain relief and, if possible, regain their mobility by resorting to a wide variety of treatment options. A natural alternative known as a glucosamine supplement has been widely used by arthritis sufferers for pain management (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4/).
