Having studied engineering in Maharashtra, Jayant Patil came from a political background. After the untimely death of his father, Patil too jumped into public life. In 1999, he had an opportunity to take over as Minister of Finance and Planning, Maharashtra making him the youngest ever finance minister of the state which he held for nine years. He was later given the post of Home Minister and was responsible for initiating Force One, Maharashtra's anti-terrorism Quick Response Team. He took over the reins of the Rural Development Department in 2009.
