Bharat Nirman is a business plan launched by the UPA government that targets the transformation of rural infrastructure. Under Bharat Nirman, action is proposed in the areas of irrigation, rural housing, rural water supply, rural electrification and rural telecommunication connectivity. The program was initiated keeping in view the importance of infrastructure for the development and urbanisation of the nation. Infrastructure promotes equitable growth and provides more opportunities in terms of transport, education and employment. The program would pave the way for poverty alleviation since a good infrastructure would help people in rural areas to have access to many services and jobs.

The program consisted of projects in many sectors like  irrigation, roads (Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana), housing (Indira Awaas Yojana), water supply (National Rural Drinking Water Programme), electrification (Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana) and telecommunication connectivity. Some of the key objectives of the program are to develop housing facilities for the poorand various targeted houses to be constructed. The plan also aims to provide electricity to every village by the year 2012 and cover 40% of the rural area with telecommunication facilities by the year 2014.

Although the government has achieved success in many of the sectors, some of the targets have not been met due to the gaps in the implementation of these schemes which ultimately affect the delivery to the beneficiaries.

IBN-Lokmat will unveil the answers by visiting different regions and talking to people about their experience, their take on the Bharat Nirman Program, also its achievements and failures.
