With all the different brands of contact lenses available, it is easy to believe that they are all the same product but with different names. Actually the different brands of contacts have many variations, such as the Focus dailies contact lenses by Ciba Vision and the 1 day Acuvue Moist contact lenses.

All contact lenses are made differently. There are tons of materials they can be made from, ways they can be designed, and the technologies used on them. They can also have similarities. Many companies will make special lenses for people with astigmatisms, for instance.

Contacts basically come in two different types: daily disposable contact lenses and non-daily disposable contact lenses. All contacts are disposable because over time they will become weaker and be easier to tear and so on. Typically, the non-daily lenses have a composition that includes less water.

The Focus dailies lens in composed of 31% nelfilcon A and 69% water and are made with lightstream technology. The 1 day Acuvue Moist contact lenses are 42% etafilcon A and 58% water and are made with Lacreon technology.  The purpose of Lacreon technology is to make the contact lens wetter. Light-stream technology on the other hand, is more concerned with high quality optic performance that can be reproduced in every lens made. The Focus dailies contact lenses use a blink activated moisture system in order to keep the lens wet. They also have a non-ionic surface that prevents protein build-up.

The 1 day Acuvue moist contact lens has UV protection that filters out 82% of UVA rays and 90% of UVB rays, which are the two types of ultraviolet radiation that make it past the ozone layer of the planet. Acuvue is actually the only brand of contact lens that offers this protection as well as using “123” as an inside out indicator for all of their lenses. The Focus dailies do not include such a feature.

Daily lenses are much healthier for the human eye than non-daily lenses, regardless of the brand. This is because the daily lenses are put in fresh each morning and thrown away every night. Due to this important feature, they can help reduce the risk of eye infections as well as the redness and irritation that can occur when a lens becomes torn, foggy, or warped. Daily contacts also have the bonus of you not requiring a lens case and bottles of solution everywhere you go.

Due to the difference in composition, some people cannot wear daily lenses or use ones that contain certain polymers, so it always best to talk to an optician in order to get the prescription changed, as many opticians will specify a brand when writing out prescriptions for their patients.
