14, February 2015: In news welcomed by renowned barge holiday operators, European Waterways, it was recently announced that the Caledonian Canal would be receiving £1 million in investment to make improvements to its towpaths. As the largest canal in Scotland, and a popular destination for barge cruises, the announcement has received plenty of support.

The improvement works will be made on the canal through the Great Glen, between Inverness and Fort William, in the biggest project to ever take place on the canal’s towpaths. In total, over 12 miles of towpath are to be improved, which is great news for walkers and cyclists.

A spokesperson from European Waterways said that many of their clients enjoy walking and cycling along the towpaths, and the improvement work is likely to attract even more people to enjoy the beauty of the area.

The towpaths that will be improved make up part of the Great Glen Way Walking Route as well as the National Cycling Network, so they are constantly in use. Towpaths play an important role in rural communities across Scotland, and they are popular with people exercising, walking for leisure or even commuting. The new all-weather surfaces will allow people to get even more from the towpaths no matter the time of year.

The work on the Caledonian Canal is part of a larger scheme across the country, which will see at total of £3.4 million invested to improve the network of towpaths. Officials say that more than 22 million people a year utilise these towpaths, and everyone will benefit from the improvements.

The works are being organised by Scottish Canals, with funding coming from Sustrans Scotland, SITA, and the Future Transport Fund.

Some of Scotland’s most beautiful destinations are found on the Caledonian Canal, including Neptune’s Staircase and Loch Ness. The spokesperson from European Waterways says the company is eagerly anticipating the completion of the improvement works in order to afford their clients and even more exciting and fulfilling experience in this stunning region.
