These programmes are implemented for all the ‘recognized’ breeds that come under purview of Biodiversity Conservation Act. Sajal Kulkarni has worked for characterization of one such unrecognized breed found in East Vidarbh named Kathani winning the Got Young scientist award. The characterization consisted on developing understanding about this breed through participatory process along with DNA analysis.

He continues to work with BAIF on the Maharashtra Gene Bank project which focuses on participatory conservation and genetic improvement of cattle breeds.
