CITES  Ineligible due to CSA Bridge and Headstock 2018 Peter Oberg #156-XP4 Port Orford Cedar Comments: Speaking and dealing with Peter is an absolute pleasure.  A consummate professional, he’s also a very nice man and very talented.  It’s my pleasure to represent his work through my gallery.  The guitar arrived early this Friday morning, where opening her up was a sincere pleasure.  Peter is  offering one of the finest American guitars I can easily present through our gallery. Guitar has gone through a full internal and external inspection.  First, she’s gorgeous.  Meticulous workmanship, it’s very clear that Peter takes much pride in his work.  Playing her at first, she was a touch bright.  Five minutes later, she started to ooze warmth and then power.  Ten minutes later and I was holding a monster, with clarity and power that would make any one envious, luthier or player.  This is a superb guitar on every level.  I believe this guitar to be an exceptional value.  Recording with her will be a pleasure. Peter’s follow-up comments on the guitar: The label bears the stamp ‘Peter Oberg’, is numbered #156-XP4, dated 2018, and ‘Port Orford Special’ There is an internal stamp (see photos) on the heel bearing the markings, PDO The headstock has been relief-carved through the Port Orford Cedar head veneer to the Ebony veneer, and the Ebony veneer has been stippled. There is one mother of pearl position marker at the 7th fret. The tie-block surround is mitered bone and white/black veneer. The guitar has a characteristic smell of Port Orford Cedar, the guitar smells awesome! There are two elliptical sound holes in the upper bout sides on either side of the neck. The neck back bears a beautiful diamond inlay clearly seen in the photographs that mirror the bridge and the head veneer carving. Peter was also kind enough to send me the story behind this particular guitar.  It is worth reading.  A remarkable guitar. “Port Orford Special 156 XP4 has a bit of a story behind its creation. I started the guitar in 2014, intending to keep the instrument for myself. As such I used materials that I have been saving for a special project, especially the highly figured Port Orford Cedar back and sides, and the outstanding piece for the quarter sawn top, which is hard to come by with its high grain count and aesthetic beauty. The piece for the neck is perfectly quartered and very stiff. The bridge blank has the distinguishing figure of rosewood found only in one in a hundred pieces. All of the bracing for the top is hand-split Port Orford, as is the bracing for the back. After completing the body, the guitar sat in my cabinet where I put bodies in progress, for three and a half years. With the demands of orders for my customers, and what little time left over spent playing and composing. I just could not get back to the guitar. Finally toward the end of 2017 I began work on the neck, and was able to stay with the guitar until it was finished. Upon stringing her up I was immediately struck by the uniqueness of the sound. There is something magical about the inner voice quality of the mid range, and the basses are full but not overpowering. After playing for about ten minutes the trebles started to open and sing, and I could tell that as this guitar plays it, its voice is going to be incredibly complex and memorable. I have done the inlay on the back of the neck on previous guitars, but this time I carried on the diamond motif, and carved the head veneer accordingly to reflect this, then inlaid two diamonds on the bridge wings. The concentric lines around the gold Mother of Pearl rosette have a blue/green scheme which is repeated in the purlings. The XP4 designation on the label refers to the 4th guitar in my career that has a special significance, which I have outlined above. After playing the guitar for a few days I realized that the scale length is a bit long for my comfort. I have been playing on a 640mm scale for over fifteen years, and I figured I could handle 645mm with no problem. What I had not bargained on is that my wrist problems, after over 50 years of playing, would be worse than when I started the guitar. So now my new project is to build another all Port Orford Cedar guitar with a 640mm scale, for myself. Hopefully it doesn’t take me another 4 years to complete this one! I sincerely hope that this instrument finds a home where she will be played and appreciated for all that she has to offer.” Please read more about Peter Oberg here. __________ Media Listening with high quality headphones or audio equipment is highly recommended including EQ manipulation, if possible. We record everything flat with just a touch of Reverb to relieve dryness. My goal is to record the guitar as realistically as is possible. I speak in the recordings, my thoughts about the guitar (and possibly other things?).  My speaking also serves to give you my first impressions and to also give you a balance of the engineering (or lack thereof) versus the sound of the guitar.  I simply do not have time to engineer much of anything.  Thanks. He has been working on some new repertoire, and is playing this Sergio Assad piece he just started working on. This is the second movement” from Sergio Assad and his “Seis Brevidades”.  It’s a work in progress, recorded on Peter’s phone.  Still sounds pretty darned good.  The guitar is seriously good.     __________ Shipping: Premium Single Arch Top or Double Arch HSC is included in your purchase price.
