Powerful and expressive, I was immediately impressed by her total experience. Singing, balanced, with projection and power. Matt is a driven builder, doing things his way, which I respect greatly. His commitment to doing what is best for the guitar, not being distracted by the “latest” craze, means that the guitar you own from Mr. Rubendall is pure in its goal. Be musical, be a concert classical guitar, with voice and power. The guitar…huh…marvelous. First thing, she’s beautiful. The Spruce, the rosette, the purflings and bindings, the headstock, the bridge (Art Deco, really nice touch) and then the incredible Maple he used. Her scale is 640mm, modeled after a French Romantic guitar that a client asked Matt to repair. Inspired by the simplicity and elegance of the guitar, Matt put a modern spin on the build, using the plantilla and the basic concept behind the guitar. Double sides and back, elevated fingerboard, giving us a unique playing experience on this instrument, facilitating higher positions, in a sound that is consistent with the era, yet powerful in her voice and projection. Ease of play allows for hours of effortless music in a supremely elegant guitar that will inspire you to be better. I love this guitar. The sides and back are double walled, formed and glued together, adding a distinct stiffness to the overall structure. The interior woods used are Douglas Fir for the internal back, and Honduran Mahogany for the internal sides, again, giving a distinct stiffness to the overall body, demanding that her voice pushes directly and confidently. The guitar demands high tension strings giving you push from the soundboard and the box as a whole. It is a distinct pleasure to play this guitar. You start smiling and lose yourself for quite a while. A real pleasure, and those of you looking for a parlor type guitar, that old school French Romantic body with a wholly modern twist, coupled with ease of play and musicality oozing out of her, then this is a guitar that needs your attention. Playing Sor and other 19th Century composers on a guitar such as this will be mind-opening for you. Matt’s workmanship and attention to detail is superb. This is an excellent concert classical guitar in every regard. Condition is pre-owned, various nail marks in and around the top. All smallish and in no way structural. The guitar was owned for less than a year, but is too small for the client.
