Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar was born in 1918 to a poor, priestly Brahmin family in Bellur district, Karnataka. Iyenger attributes his zeal for yoga to his brother-in-law Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya who in 1934 had asked Iyenger to come to Mysore to improve his health through the practice of Yoga. There Iyengar for the first time learned the art of Asana practice and meditation which had a drastic impact on his health. Iyengar along with the other students was also made to give Yoga demonstrations in the Maharaja’s court in Mysore. That phase became the turning point in his life and made him one of the finest yoga teachers in the world. At the age of 95, Mr. Iyengar is regarded as the living legend of yoga.

He is responsible for introducing yoga in the west during the 70’s and has also been named as one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people. Today, Iyengar Yoga is the most commonly practiced form of Yoga across the world. Headquartered in Pune the Iyengar Yoga centre has many yoga schools across various countries.

Mr Iyengar is very well known for his own personal practice, years of rich experience, dedication, his techniques of ‘Pranayam’ or the art of breathing and his passion for the art and science of yoga. Apart from being an excellent teacher, Mr Iyengar is also the author of many famous yoga books like Light on Yoga, also known as the bible of yoga. Mr. Iyengar’s most recent book is also an international bestseller called Light on Life.

He has been applauded through many awards and accolades like the Padma Shri in 1991, the Padma Bhushan in 2002 and the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian honour award in 2014.In 2011 Mr Iyengar was also honoured with a commemorative stamp issued by the Beijing branch of China Post.
