Bacall’s new book shows how yoga can help regulate hormones to burn fat

Yoga teacher, wellness coach, author, and entrepreneur Patricia Bacall has been helping people all over the world heal trauma, breathe easier, and lose weight for 30 years, but her new book Easy Weight Loss Yoga 2: Intermediate shows practitioners how to target their metabolism and use specific yoga postures to assist with hormonal regulation to maximize weight loss.

Bacall’s book, which by itself is a thorough introduction to yoga and gives several complete yoga workouts, explains the function of all the major glands in the body, and how a regular yoga practice can affect hormonal regulation. In particular, Bacall shares how insulin and cortisol production can hinder weight loss, and how yoga can stimulate the thyroid, and adrenaline, insulin, glucagons, testosterone, human growth hormone, and insulin-like growth factor production, to assist with weight loss.

In addition to direct regulation of the glands and organs, Bacall advocates yoga to create more restful sleep as a part of a successful weight-loss regime, as new research shows that yoga benefits melatonin production--key to getting a good night’s sleep. If the body does not get enough rest, a hormone called leptin may build up. “We need to ensure that sufficient sleep occurs to bring leptin levels down to their daily lows before morning,” Bacall writes. “If we don’t do this, higher leptin levels in the morning will signal for our energy to be low and for fat to be stored, which is the opposite of what is desirable.”

Bacall’s answer to overcoming weight issues is a threefold approach: the book offers a complete yoga practice that combines relaxation, stamina, balance, and fat-burning, with full text descriptions and photographs; an “Easy Weight Loss Yoga” style of eating that is a philosophy of eating rather than a strict diet, which optimizes nutrition and trains the body to burn fat instead of sugar; and finally, short discourses on meditation, breathing and focusing techniques that relax, reset, and reconnect the mind and body. As Bacall explains, “It has been said that yoga practice is more correctly ‘breathing with postures,’ rather than postures with breathing.”
