November 12, 2013: Welspun Energy Ltd. (WEL), India’s leading renewable energy generator has launched several initiatives for uplifting women in the villages across various districts in Madhya Pradesh over the last two years. Underlining the company’s vision of empowering communities around its area of operations, WEL has successfully helped these women build an independent source of income. Welspun Energy’s 151 (DC) MW solar project located in Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh will be the 2nd largest solar plant worldwide.

Welspun Energy focuses on initiatives that ensure comprehensive growth in the society. In Madhya Pradesh specifically, WEL is enabling women through various skill-building courses. It has been transforming opportunities into sustainable income sources for over 99 women across the state.

Out of the several villages benefitting from Welspun Energy’s CSR initiatives, Shri Bhanu Gujjal, Sarpanch, Neemuch said, “Welspun Energy has brought about a lot of confidence among the women in our village. The Nav Kiran Tailoring centre has taught them the art of stitching very well. It has given them an opportunity to earn some income and many have started taking it up as their work option. Since many of us villagers have large families living together, an additional income can help us a lot.”

Speaking on the initiatives, Mr. Vineet Mittal, Managing Director, Welspun Energy Ltd. said, “We strive to share the value generated by our projects with the local communities in the area and empower them to realise their true potential. We conducted detailed surveys in all districts to initiate the programs which would be most beneficial to women in the area.  Our sole objective was to make them self-reliant and enable economic opportunities for them. It is heartening to see that we have been able to make a difference for so many families.”

Skill based courses:

Welspun Energy realised the need to develop skill based courses for rural women. Through various surveys it found the women in these areas to be more inclined towards stitching & tailoring. Welspun Energy started the Navkiran Tailoring & Stitching Centre in association with ‘Usha International’ in 2011, conducting free professional classes for women on tailoring, knitting and embroidery in one of the districts. There are 4 such centres operational today with about 120 women enrolled in them. The centre provides a short 3 month course especially aimed at students intending to learn stitching in holidays, and a detailed 6 month certification course. Usha International provides sewing machines and trains the teachers at the centres on a regular basis. This initiative is immensely successful among the community, with more than 90% of the certified women using their newly developed skill to gain financial benefit, either by working at the centre or as freelancers.

Creating economic opportunities:

Welspun Energy launched the ‘Diya basket’ initiative in 2011, to illustrate that a simple activity like diya making could generate income opportunities for women. Besides local women, this program involved local potters and basket weavers. Over four thousand diyas and four hundred baskets were sourced from potters and basket weavers respectively. Groups were formed and given specific roles of painting diyas, decorating the bamboo baskets and packaging them attractively. Welspun Energy helped them in supplying their packed baskets to shopkeepers located in Kotma and Bijuria markets. The packaged diya baskets received immense appreciation from the customers and also generated advanced orders.  Savings from initiatives conducted in the previous year is being used by these women for executing current year’s activity. They save fifty percent of the profits earned and treat them as investments in future while the rest fifty percent are considered as earnings.
