In a move which may benefit rental villa companies such as Essential Italy, Umbria was recently awarded a distinction as one of the top regions in the world for wine tourism.
The distinction in question was awarded by specialised publication the Wine Enthusiast, as part of their Top 10 list of wine destinations for the present year. The region therefore joins rather more famous parts of Italy, such as Tuscany, on wine aficionados’ preferred travel maps.
Before the Wine Enthusiast’s piece, Umbria’s main claim to fame was as Italy’s ‘green lung’. The region was better known for its rolling green meadows and quaint ambiance than for any prowess in the field of grape-harvesting or wine-making. The specialised periodical considered, however, that the area has just as much to offer as its more famous neighbour and other Italian counterparts, as they explain in their piece.
According to the author of the feature, the region stands out above all for its Sagrantino de Montefalco, a savoury red produced at what is arguably the area’s best-known vineyard. Orvietto, a white wine close to Grechetto, was also highlighted as one of Umbria’s top wines, and might interest keen tasters visiting the region.
The spotlight on Umbrian wine as one of the hidden treasures of the field was considered to only add to its other charms, already known to fans of travelling in Italy. In its piece, the Wine Enthusiast singled out Umbria’s unspoilt medieval towns, the academic and intellectual atmosphere of capital Perugia, the Basilica of St Francis at Assisi, the country ideals ideal for cycling and, of course, the verdant hills. Periodic music and culture festivals such as Umbria Jazz were not forgotten, either.
The implication of this piece to companies such as Essential Italy, who provide rental accommodation in the area, are evident, and booking agents for these outfits can therefore rightfully expect an increase in demand over the course of 2014.
