Exercising good gum health is very important to the survival of your teeth. Millions of people throughout the world have gum disease, which can be detrimental to dental health, as well as your overall health. One of the most common types of gum disease is periodontitis . Periodontitis is a set of inflammatory diseases which affect the tissues that surround and support the, primarily the gums.

This condition involves progressive loss of the kind of bone around the teeth, causing the gum lines to recede. If this condition is left untreated, it can lead to the loosening and subsequent loss of teeth. Periodontitis is caused by tiny microscopic organisms that grow to latch on to the surface of teeth. A diagnosis of periodontitis is established by inspecting gum tissues surrounding the teeth with an X-ray to determine the amount of bone loss around the teeth.

The primary cause of this disease is poor or ineffective dental hygiene, which leads to the accumulation of bacteria at the gum line, commonly known as dental plaque. Other factors can be poor nutrition, smoking or underlying medical issues, like diabetes. In some cases, gingivitis, which is a very common, relatively mild form of gum disease, can progress to the level of periodontitis with the destruction of the gum tissues that separate from the tooth, causing deep gaps called periodontal pockets. The more that bacteria inhabits those pockets, the more it will cause inflammation in the gum tissues and subsequent progressive bone loss.

In extreme cases, the area outside of your mouth can become swollen and infected. There are several procedures that will help rejuvenate your gums and seal up the periodontal pockets to prevent further infection, but the best defense against periodontitis is oral hygiene, which is why every dentist will recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing your gums at least once a day.
