09, May 2015: In a move welcomed by Hostelling International, the only global network of Youth Hostel Associations, teachers are able to stay for free when accompanying students staying in group accommodation in the Swiss Youth Hostels

A Welcome Initiative

The Swiss Youth Hostels now offer free accommodation and breakfast to teachers staying with their students in group accommodation in hostels of the Swiss network. With this initiative the not-for-profit organization intends to support schools and universities in their school camps and study trip planning.

In many places in Switzerland, the Swiss Youth Hostels offer varied solutions and original group accommodation for school camps. Today, they want to be even more attractive to schools and universities by offering to allow teachers and chaperones to stay for free for the duration of the group stay. This offer will be valid for two teachers or chaperones for a group of 20 paying students and one additional free chaperone for each 10 paying students.

“It was important for us to help schools and universities to organise camps and such projects,” said Fredi Gmür, CEO of Swiss Youth Hostels. He goes on to explain: “The goal is that students get to know their country better and gain valuable social experiences outside the class room and the usual teaching environment.”

While this offer is valid in 46 of the Swiss Youth hostels it should be noted that Youth Hostels in Bellinzone, Engelberg, Fiesch Gersau, Lugano and Romanshorn, however, do not participate in the project.
