Success Of Local Hero Could Inspire Fairfax BJJ Students

Former Virginia high school wrestling star Logan Griffin could well constitute an example for Fairfax BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) students with his inspiring tale of climbing the Mixed Martial Arts ranks.

Twenty-two-year-old Logan was a member of the wrestling team at Virginia High School, in Bristol, having taken up the sport in middle school (the American equivalent of preparatory school). He was inspired to take up the sport by the opportunity it provided to push one’s body and mind to the limit, a challenge Logan says he cherishes.

With this mindset, the young Virginian’s progression from a promising amateur wrestling career to an interest in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was nothing if not natural, and his move to a specialised school in his home town will have mirrored the experiences of at least a few Fairfax BJJ students.

However, before he even made the transition, the youngster experienced a pivotal moment in his career, as he contracted a neck injury on the course of a high school wrestling match. The final tally of two broken bones may be considered lucky by some, but it ended this promising wrestler’s career for good.

The subsequent six-year gap would have discouraged many a promising athlete into giving up their sport of choice for good. However, in a display of spirit which could and should inspire Fairfax BJJ students, Griffin refused to give up. Continuing to push himself to as hard a training regime as he could, the then-teenager merely shifted focus, definitively embracing his passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts in general. Shortly after enrolling at a prominent academy in his area, the youth began carving an MMA career for himself, which is now beginning to bear its first fruits. He easily acquired his purple belt, and recently performed the ‘submission of the night’ at a local tournament, walking away with the respective award.

Griffin, who considers himself a martial artist first and a fighter second, should continue to excel at MMA both locally and at a broader level, and could become an idol for younger Fairfax BJJ practitioners.
