Orlando, FL – April 2, 2015 – For decades, health experts have been telling children to drink more milk for healthy bones. Now, recent study results may have proved them right, and with joint diseases such as osteoarthritis becoming more prevalent, the timing couldn’t be more apt.
A study has found that drinking milk could potentially slow down the progression of osteoarthritis. While milk has long been known for the benefits it offers to bone health, its effects on the joints have not been well studied. According to the study published in Arthritis Care & Research, women who were suffering from osteoarthritis, and who drank milk regularly, experienced less progression of their condition. This finding was based on measuring the decline in joint space width.
“The study used over 2,000 individuals who were suffering from knee osteoarthritis. It obtained data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative, which was launched by the National Institutes of Health,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.
The subjects were asked to remember their diet details, how often they drank milk in the past year and how much they drank. Through the information they obtained, the researchers observed that there was a decrease in osteoarthritis progression over time. The study was conducted in a span of two years and the result was obtained thereafter. However, the positive effects of milk consumption in osteoarthritis only appeared to occur in women. They experienced a smaller decrease of joint space within the two years of consuming milk.
While milk consumption appears to have positive effects on osteoarthritis, eating large amounts of cheese seemed to make the condition worse. According to researchers, the undesirable effects of high cheese consumption may be due to the high fat content of the food. They also added that consumption of yogurt was not linked to any changes to the width of joint space.
Many individuals with osteoarthritis, especially women, are delighted with the idea that milk could potentially help them improve their condition. However, experts warn sufferers not to get ahead of themselves. Further research is needed to clarify and replicate the findings before incorporating milk into osteoarthritis management regimes.
