Sparta Movers offers complimentary moving services to relocate victims of domestic violence

Calgary, Alberta — 03/16/2017 — Sparta Movers, a Calgary-based start-up moving company, understands the importance of giving back to the community. In response to a spike in Calgary’s domestic violence last year, Sparta Movers have started 2017 with a new resolution which is to help victims of domestic violence in Calgary by offering complimentary moving services to relocate them to safety.

According to Calgary Police Services, the number of domestic violence investigations in Calgary exceeded 25,000 during 2016, which well surpassed the 19,000 recorded in 2015.

“We also felt this increase by receiving more phone calls than typically from people running away from home violence” says Eugene, VP Operations at Sparta Movers.

Kim Ruse with the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter agrees the increase in Calgary’s domestic violence is likely linked to the economic downturn.

Staff Sgt. Rob Davidson with the Calgary Police Service's domestic conflict unit says the numbers are likely much higher, given that experts believe only about 30 per cent of incidents get reported to police.

“Giving back to the community where we operate feels just the right thing to do” says Eugene. “We always volunteer when the right opportunity presents itself. Last year, for example, at the peak of unemployment in Calgary, Sparta Movers volunteered their trucks and crews to help Calgary Food Bank moving tons of supplies from local schools, churches, businesses and other generous donors throughout Calgary as part of “Operation Christmas 2016” ran by Calgary Food Bank.”
