04, February 2015: Every year total eclipses can be seen somewhere on around the planet, but in fact, experts say that sightings in Europe are actually quite rare. This incredible event, when the moon totally blocks out the light of the sun, has only been witnessed in Europe by a very lucky few.

Representatives from respected Northern Lights travel company, Aurora Nights, say this is why excitement is currently growing in anticipation of the next solar eclipse, due to take place on March 20th, which will be visible in Northern Scandinavia. If ever travellers have considered going on one of the excellent Northern Lights trips, they say now is definitely a prime time to do so.

On this date in March, the moon will pass in front of the sun, eclipsing it almost entirely (around 98% coverage). For those lucky enough to witness this magical event (due to last for well over two minutes), it will be a true once-in-a-lifetime event. For travellers to Iceland, one of the very best places to witness the solar eclipse is from the Hotel Ranga, in its newly built observatory. With a local astronomer on hand, alongside hi-tech computerised telescopes, the eclipse is set to be a dramatic and fascinating experience.

Dedicated travel company Aurora Nights is offering Northern Lights trips combined with the incredible opportunity to see the eclipse. Representatives say that. considering the rarity of this event in Europe, this is one trip not to pass up — the next European solar eclipse is not due until 2090.

For those lucky travellers who are planning to embark on one of the Northern Lights trips at the time of the solar eclipse, there is a real treat in store. But it is worth remembering that while Northern Scandinavia will certainly have the best experience, there will be a partial eclipse in the British Isles as well. While much less spectacular, scientists say it will still be well worth seeing.
