However, the most prominent feature of the forthcoming elections is theimpact of social media on Indian politics. Social Media, in the recent months has become a global phenomenon. It is a new way to communicate, exchange ideas and create awareness. In India, Social Media has been used to create awareness, campaigns and advertisements for the upcoming general elections. Many social media platforms are also urging the youth to cast their vote in the country's biggest general elections. Political parties are resorting to social media platforms to convey messages and woo voters.

India has the third largest Internet users’ base globally of more than 238 million users with a majority comprising of youth. Most of these users are active on Facebook and Twitter. Due to this vast pool of internet users, political parties have launched campaigns and advertisements through social media to connect with the youth. India has an electoral strength of over 814 million voters including over 23 million in the age group of 18-19 years. Social media provides an easy, cost effective and quick medium to reach out the millions of voters and youngsters in India including many of the first time voters.
