Orlando, FL — April 21, 2015 — There are many comorbidities in arthritis and patients do not only suffer from pain, but also other discomforts. One of the many things that arthritis patients should know about their condition is the consequence of not sleeping well.

A recent study revealed that rheumatoid arthritis patients who sleep poorly could be more at risk for functional disability. This means that these patients may have more difficulty doing things such as buttoning their shirt or tying their shoes.

“Getting a good night’s sleep has always been an important part of living a healthy lifestyle. Individuals who are suffering from medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis should see to it that they are getting enough sleep on a daily basis,” said VitaBreeze Supplements Spokesperson Michelle O’Sullivan.

The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine published a study that found poor-quality sleep is linked to increased disability in individuals suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. Patients should be given all the help they can get to enable a good quality sleep, as it may have a significant impact on their health and life.

Research Assistant Faith S. Luyster, PhD, and her colleagues in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Nursing, conducted a study that involved 162 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Using a sleep questionnaire, they found that 61 percent of the patients were poor sleepers. Additionally, 33 percent of the participants reported some severe pain that disrupted their sleep a minimum of three times every week.

“Rheumatoid arthritis patients are more likely to suffer from disturbed sleep, which has been linked to higher levels of depression, fatigue and pain. However, less is known about the association between functional disability and poor sleep in rheumatoid arthritis patients,” added O’Sullivan.

Luyster has provided some tips on how to get better sleep for rheumatoid arthritis patients. These include setting a schedule for bedtime and wake time, avoiding intake of caffeine and alcohol in the evening, and making their bedroom conducive to sleeping.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition. However, nowadays many patients are using a wide variety of treatment options just to improve the quality of their life. One of the most popular natural remedies is curcumin supplements. Curcumin is the key ingredient of turmeric, which is an ancient medicinal spice. Curcumin supplements are widely believed to have powerful therapeutic benefits (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
