Orlando, FL— October 20, 2015 — Omega-3 fatty acids have long been believed to have a myriad of therapeutic benefits. They are considered to be healthy fats, and their use is associated with a variety of health benefits. The good news is that there is another potential advantage of using the natural ingredient.

Researchers reveal the mind-altering effects of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s can be obtained from eating food sources such as fish, or consuming supplements. Fish oil supplements are widely believed to provide powerful health benefits for heart health. They are not only good for the heart but also for the head since they are associated with an improvement in stress, mood disorders, and alcohol abuse.

The Indiana School of Medicine’s researchers conducted a multi-year study. It involved knowing the conclusive molecular and behavioral benefits of omega-3s for mice with bipolar disorder. The study was featured in the journal Translational Psychiatry.

Alexander B. Niculescu III, M.D., Ph.D., lead author of the study and associate professor of psychiatry, states that docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), is one of the major and most popular ingredients in fish oil, and it is found to help normalize the behavior of the animal subjects.

The study revealed that the mice displayed some bipolar symptoms such as depression and manic, especially when subjected to stress. Researchers further added that the mice responded positively to the DHA in fish oil. The depression disappeared, and when the mice were subjected to stress, they did not become manic.

Surprisingly, the researchers also found that the genes, which are typically targeted by psychiatric medications, were also normalized and modulated by DHA. What makes the study even more interesting is that the researchers found a reduction in the desire of the mice for alcohol.

According to Dr. Niculescu, the bipolar mice loved alcohol like bipolar patients. The mice that consumed DHA experienced a reduction in their desire to drink alcohol, and it even curtailed their alcohol abusive behavior. Authors suggest that there is a chance omega-3s may be helpful for preventing and treating not just bipolar disorder, but also alcoholism.

Omega-3s can be obtained by eating fish such as herring, tuna and sardines. People who do not want to eat fish or who want the easier way to obtain omega-3s can take advantage of fish oil supplements. There are many fish oil supplements available nowadays, and experts recommend the use of products that contain the highest concentration of omega-3s. Those who do not like to experience undesirable fish oil aftertaste may choose a product with capsules that have enteric coating (http://www.amazon.com/Omega-Fish-Oil-Supplement-Softgels/dp/B00O8NS20K).
