26, September 2014: Over the last few years, there have been a number of expert reports highlighting the importance of purchasing even basic travel insurance online. However, a recent poll conducted by one of the UK’s major financial companies has revealed that many people wouldn’t bother to obtain cover for worldwide trips lasting longer than six months.

Explanations for the reluctance to purchase travel insurance vary from exorbitant cost to hassle and inconvenience. However, the chorus of travel experts continue to insist that it’s far more sensible to buy cheap travel insurance online rather than incur the risk of high cost healthcare in foreign countries. This is a particularly pertinent point for those individuals who are planning on travelling to America.

Some travellers admit to relying solely upon the EHIC card as a safeguard against medical expenses when visiting European countries. However, this method of reimbursement does not cover the cost of repatriation or urgent accommodation. The EHIC payments also take a relatively long time to process.

A substantial proportion of travellers claim they still aren’t convinced that it’s essential to purchase cover. Over a fifth of the survey respondents said that they wouldn’t bother to obtain a policy for a European break lasting for a week or two. Others said that they were prepared to venture beyond the continent without cover.

Top travel experts beg to differ from this negligent school of thought and agree more needs to be done to highlight the pitfalls of going uninsured. Travellers need to be be aware that foreign medical care is exceedingly expensive, and those in the know also highlight the potential disruption and financial impact of natural events, such as the eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano in 2010.

One leading financial expert says, “Most people’s holidays are the relaxing break they plan, but if things do go wrong you could end up significantly out of pocket if you haven’t taken out travel insurance. If you or a family member is taken seriously ill abroad it’s likely to be stressful and scary enough, without the worry of how you are going to pay the bill.”

Prospective travellers concerned about the wide range of negative scenarios that can occur on holiday should research travel insurance online. Experts advise visiting the price comparison websites and reading customer reviews regarding the level of service provided by specialist insurers.
