One of the most heinous crimes, rape cases are becoming an increasing cause of worry the world over. Be it a developed nation or a third world country, rape is a growing cause of concern for the governing authorities. What is shocking is that not only the deprived but even the richest of the rich succumb to this ugly crime; but because of the stigma attached to it, most of these cases do not see the light of the day. Fear of being ostracized, singled out and humiliation is the major reason for these cases not coming out in open. Rape is a crime not only against the body of an individual but also against one’s mind, psyche and reputation; and what is worst is that the rapist can be questioned only if he is caught but the victim is questioned at every stage. The victim is fragmented socially, emotionally and psychologically. Sometimes, the victim is even reluctant to lodge a complaint in the fear of mortification and embarrassment that would follow. For justice, courts always need circumstantial evidence for a judgment which many a times is difficult to produce and hence the suffering continues.
