Portal Suggests Top 10 Peaks For Travellers Hiking In China

English-language Chinese portal Xin Hua Net, in association with the South China Morning Post, has recently published an article detailing the top ten peaks to explore for travellers hiking in China.

The selection criteria for which mountains can feature hinged on a number of factors, not least of which being total altitude. Historic or cultural associations were also taken into account when selecting the peaks to feature in this photo-gallery aimed at tourists hiking in China.

Of course, no list of this kind would be complete without the world’s highest peak, and it features prominently on this selection as well, taking up the first of the ten available spots. Mount Qomulangma, in the Mahalangur section of the Himalayas, needs no other attractive feature than its 8,848m peak altitude to entice avid mountaineers hiking in China, and its place on this countdown is a formality.

But while none of the other peaks on the list can compete with Mount Qomulangma for sheer altitude, they all offer points of attraction in their own right, most related to the region’s ancient or present culture. The second and third entries on the list, Meilli Snow Mountain in Tibet and Mount Tai, both have religious connections and further down the list there are a number of other sacred Chinese and Tibetan peaks for visitors hiking in China to admire and perhaps explore. Mount Tai also offers some fine examples of ancient Chinese art to admire.

Art is also the focal point of Mount Ermei, another suggestion on the list, which is topped by a world-renowned, massive statue of Buddha. The rest of the mountains, however, make the list mostly on the back of their natural beauty, the views they offer and the challenge they present for more avid hikers, all of which are perfectly valid reasons in their own right.

The list in question was published in the ‘English News’ section of Xin Hua Net, and later featured in the South China Morning Post, one of the leading newspapers in that specific region of China.
