One of the most heart rendering story of the Maharashtra state is of drought situation which has hit thousands of people.  While the government is crying hoarse about the situation, farmers are cutting off their crops and digging deeper than ever for water which has led to a major man-made disaster. The Government of Maharashtra is said to take some initiative from the provided aids and funds, but are these efforts paying off for the affected people to overcome this grave situation? This week, IBN-Lokmat’s Reporter Vinod Talekar explores some parts of the state to find out how this drought is man-made, Sunday, 19th May 2013 at 10.00 am and 8.30 pm only on IBN-Lokmat.

Maharashtra has the highest number of dams in the country, yet its irrigation coverage is not sufficient for the state.  A callous polity, lack of political will and years of poor governance has brought a major man-made disaster which is set to turn worse in coming months. No efforts have been taking for restoration of water levels, river banks are getting blocked day by day leaving no water for usage. The prevailing drought will affect Cash crop like sugar crane availability due to shortage of water this year. The state which is considered as the key state in producing sugarcane will see less of fresh planting. Some other serious concerns related to man-made disasters are like contractors driven dams and incomplete projects which are responsible for drought.

The feeling that all is normal is broken at the moment as one sees all dried up, barren land. If the situation gets worse, the price of one commodity will move up: Water, which is usually considered to be widely available. This week IBN-Lokmat’s Vinod Talekar unfolds the battle for water created by man-made disaster. Tune into Reportaaz on Sunday, 19th May 2013 at 10.00 am and 8.30 pm on IBN-Lokmat.
