In exploring links between disease and nutrition, researchers believe it is possible that eating a cup of blueberries a day can help prevent cell damage linked to cancer.

New York, NY - August 25, 2011 -- Blueberries and other fruits are considered beneficial because they all contain antioxidants, flavonoids, vitamins and other valuable compounds. “Antioxidants protect cells by stabilizing free radicals, and can prevent some of the damage they cause,” says Laura Newton, M.A.Ed., R.D., an associate professor in the Department of Nutrition Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

There is evidence that free radicals can cause cellular damage, which is one of the factors in the development of cancer. “Studies suggest that antioxidants may help prevent the free radical damage associated with cancer,” according to Newton, a licensed dietician who works with cancer patients.
