17, December 2014: Travelling to the main destinations in Italy just got even easier for tourists, after Fiumicino Airport in Rome was recently linked to the high-speed rail network.

Travel industry experts from ABTOI’s Love Italy website concur this news will make life a lot easier for tourists. Travellers arriving in Rome and needing to go on to other popular destinations, like Venice and Florence, previously had to travel to the Termini station in Rome to change to trains to their final destination. This often proved problematic as there is a long walk at the station to connect with on-going trains – especially difficult for tourists carrying heavy luggage.

However, now that Fiumicino Airport has been incorporated into the rail network, travellers can catch a train as soon as they arrive at the airport and get directly to a large number of destinations, including Rome, Florence, Bologna, Padua and Venice.

Experts from the ABTOI consortium’s Love Italy say this will be an especially good option for travellers who want to go to Venice, with a journey of just over four hours on the train. There are two trains leaving the airport each day, and two returning.

The airport is linked up to the network that operates the ‘Frecciargento’ trains. These are faster than standard trains – although not the fastest. The even faster trains are the ‘Frecciarossa’ trains, but for these to be used the tracks need to be updated. Reports suggest this is just the first stage in a plan to link the airport to the high-speed railway network, so further improvements could come into effect in the not too distant future.

The new train route, which began on December 14, is a great option for any travellers who want to see both Rome and Venice, as well as other destinations in Italy.
