NAVSUP: Managing the Supply Chain for Navy

US Navy is a huge organization performing its role of defending the waters and serving the military interests of the country all across the globe. There are many companies and organizations playing important part in helping US Navy to achieve its objectives. One such organization is Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) that has its headquarters in a city called Mechanicsburg in Pennsylvania. The main responsibility of this Naval Command is to look after the requirements of navy personnel by maintaining supplies.  

 

 

NAVSUP itself is no ordinary organization having been made up of nearly 25000 employees that are drawn from both civilian as well as armed forces. The organization is empowered to make its own policies and set the procedures as it issues navy contracts, procures items, looks after transportation, and also provides security assistance to not only navy personnel around the globe but to also people connected with armed forces of alliednations.

 

NAVSUP is perhaps worlds most dynamic and efficient supply system that comes under the aegis of the Department of Defense. The organization, through its logistics capabilities, looks after the weapons systems of navy. The organization maintains supply chains that provide materials for the weapons systems deployed on ships, aircrafts, and submarines under the control of the Navy. There are many programs being run and looked after by the organization that are directly connected with the quality of lives of the sailors and other navy personnel such as navy exchanges, navy property program, navy lodges, the postal system for navy and the invaluable food service program.

 

NAVSUP is responsible for maintaining the supplies to nearly 400 messes that are preparing meals for more than 300000 navy personnel. This is no ordinary task as it involves throwing navy contracts for food supplies so as to look after the meal requirements of personnel that may be afloat or on the shores. Navy personnel remain at the focus of the organization and this requires close cooperation with the vendors and suppliers. This also requires the organization to be flexible in its approach so that it is best able to support the needs of the navy.

 

Earlier, there was an organization called inventory control point that worked to provide navy and marines with products through streamlined logistics. The same role is now being played by weapons system support of NAVSUP that aims to enhance combat capabilities of the navy. The support system has its facilities at two sites in Philadelphia. One of these sites is dedicated to providing support to aircrafts of the navy while the other looks after weapons systems of the ships and submarines.

 

To fulfill its obligations, the organization frequently issues navy contracts to companies based in the country. However, NAVSUP keeps on evaluating the performance of the companies winning such navy contracts on a frequent basis. In fact, the operations of the organization touch the lives of navy personnel across the globe and help in improving the quality of lives f naval officers no matter where they are posted.
