My Best Friend FM Radio

Her name means love and affection in Urdu. She’s a conqueror. At the ‘BIG Cricket Champions’ contest on 92.7 BIG FM, Rumana has shown the world what it is to truly beat the odds. Her story reveals to us the power of a communication medium as simple as FM radio. Her life is one that is brimming with enthusiasm, hope and contentment, and filled with the light of knowledge and confidence. Our lives are what we make of it. Read on to understand why this young Indian is an inspiration to millions…

If you’re reading this article, chances are, you’re blessed with the power to see, unlike an estimate 15 million Indians who are visually impaired. Rumana was a beautiful baby who was born blind in the small village of Sultanpur near Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. She grew up in a financially backward family where her parents could not afford to treat her sightlessness or provide any formal education.

Even though she was faced with difficult conditions, her attitude to learn and discover made all the difference. As a 5-year-old, she was willing to learn about new things. She began spending time listening to programs on a little radio set. As time passed, the radio became her closest friend and took her into a whole new world of information, knowledge and entertainment. Rumana loved spending time listening to Akaashvani and participated in a host of varied contests hosted on radio.

Though she could not see, cricket was a sport Rumana enjoyed and followed closely like millions of other Indians. She dedicated herself to attaining knowledge about the game. Her family, especially her younger brother, helped her understand the sports’ minutest details. She knows much more about the game compared to any average Indian and can engage in a charming conversation about it.

The setting up of private FM networks opened doors for her to learn and acquire much more knowledge. Rumana made it a point to listen to FM for a large part of her day. Soon she began winning contests. Today, Rumana has won more than 250 prizes through radio contests!

She just emerged as the winner of one of the toughest cricket based quizzes on Indian FM radio, answering some of the most challenging questions. The young woman beat contestants from across the country proving that someone with a determined heart and mind can conquer the odds regardless of circumstances.

Since cricket is close to her heart, winning the contest brought Rumana endless amounts of joy. She feels coming out on top in the contest will always be her most prestigious achievement. “By winning a big contest like this, I have reached a whole new phase in my life. My family is thrilled and I am getting continuous congratulatory calls from well wishers”, she said excitedly. Saving money, Rumana has now invested in a second radio set. What’s more, she is a true patriot who cheers for every game India plays and dreams of meeting her hero, Sachin Tendulkar.

Many Rumanas we do not know are living lives that are inspiring, proving, as Helen Keller said, “the best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.”

This account reaffirms the fact that radio serves as a powerful medium of communication in society. It uplifts lives, opens doors to things new and exciting, and brings listeners on to one platform that crosses manmade barriers of cast, creed, nationality and religion.

Rumana was discovered through an FM contest. Her story is inspiring thousands and proves that our lives are what we make of it.
