Portrait of Presidential candidate Donald Trump Painted on shredded US Currency is MIA from Ripley’s Believe It Or Not museums.

Edward Meyer, VP of Exhibits & Archives at Ripley’s believe It Or Not,  sees more unusual things before lunch on a normal day that most people see in a lifetime.  During a nationwide trip to find even more oddities in 2014, he purchased a portrait of Donald Trump painted on $32,000.00 of shredded US currency. This was long before Trump announced his run for President, but was of interest to Ripley’s because of the shredded currency and also because of Trump’s popularity in New York City and Atlantic City, both locations that have Ripley’s Odditoriums.

The portrait can be seen in press photos from 2014 displayed at the New York City location on the famous 42nd St in Times Square, but then it quietly vanished. With Trump’s Presidential bid growing stronger it began to strike Trump supporters as odd that the portrait was missing. When they inquired at Ripley’s they were given answers ranging from “It is in Atlantic City” to “It is being cleaned”. A  check with the Atlantic City location confirmed it is not there, but may have been at one time. Calls and emails to Ripley’s Believe It Or Not headquarters in Florida have not provided any answers.

Artist Drake Barry has no idea as to the location of his work either. According to Barry, the portrait has nothing to do with politics but was part of a series of paintings of billionaires completed two years ago. A similar painting of Bill Gates from the same series was purchased by a private collector.  One employee at the Times Square Ripley’s location suggested that the missing painting might have been seized by the Secret Service because it is illegal to destroy US currency. Further inquires revealed that while destroying currency is illegal, the $32,000.00 in shredded bills used in the painting were legally obtained through the US mint.

Is the missing painting sitting crated somewhere deep within Ripley’s vast archives (think of the final scene of Raider’s Of The Lost Ark), or has it been the subject of an elaborate Thomas Crown Affair style heist? Has it, as some suspect, been removed from display due to politics? For now there are no answers…believe it or not.
