Portsmouth, NH, Jan 9, 2014 - Nationwide, higher numbers of men are seeking cosmetic surgery. In 2011, nine percent of surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures in the United States were performed on men, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), a 121% increase since 1997. The number of men receiving liposuction and eyelid surgeries continues to climb. More than 41,000 liposuction procedures and almost 23,000 eyelid surgeries were performed on men in 2011, increasing 14 percent and 6 percent, respectively.

The fastest-growing cosmetic procedures for men are surgical. Liposuction is by far the most common cosmetic surgical procedures performed on men, followed by rhinoplasty (nose surgery), eyelid surgery, male breast reduction and face-lifts. "Our personal experience here at Atlantic Plastic Surgery Center is that men are seeking eyelid surgery because it is a very easy and fast recovery and gives the face a much younger look right away. Gynecomastia, or male breast reduction, is the second most common procedure we perform. Men do not want fullness in their breast tissue. And it is particularly beneficial for young men to get that problem remedied so that they will not suffer additional years of embarrassment with that condition," states Dr. Lawrence Gray.

What is prompting this phenomenon? A sizable portion of the US population, both men and women are simply growing older, as shown by Bureau of Labor Statistics. Both men and women are increasingly worried as they age that they will be able to keep their jobs and not be replaced with their younger counterparts. Women have sought aesthetic enhancement for decades, but now men are feeling the pressure and are seeking assistance in looking younger for a competitive edge in the job market. Men and women between the ages of 35 to 64 make up 71 percent of all cosmetic procedures in the United States. Competing in the job market is requiring that applicants look younger and more youthful. It has become acceptable for men to color their hair and to have facial fillers and other facial procedure such as eyelid surgery or a full facelift.

Many factors, including medical, technological, economic and societal factors contribute to the increase. First, it has become fare more acceptable for men to seek aesthetic enhancement. We see plastic surgery is everywhere today. People are increasingly comfortable with non-invasive procedures and in going under the knife. Most procedures today are day surgery, which makes it easy to have done without notice. Advances in anesthesia, in particular, have made many procedures available on an outpatient basis, eliminating the need for an overnight stay in a hospital, reducing recovery times and helping the patient get back to work quickly. The pervasiveness of makeover shows on television, magazine coverage on men improving their appearance and the wealth of information available over the internet has also contributed to plastic surgery's acceptance.

The eyelids and mid-section are among the first parts of the body to show signs of age. Fortunately they are quite easy to remedy with eyelid surgery and liposuction. Now with coolsculpting, the numbers of men seeking fat reduction around the middle has taken another jump. Men are feeling significant pressure to looking youthful. Fortunately, it is happening at a point in time when it is commonplace for men to see plastic surgical and non-surgical assistance to maintain a youthful appearance and help them complete in the marketplace.
