City of Vienna, European Institute for Gender Equality and WHO Regional Office for Europe: Press Conference, Vienna City Hall, 25 November 2013, 10:30 a.m. — flag raising event marking “16 Days of Activism against Gender-based  Violence”

25 November marks the UN “International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women” and the launch of the global “16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence” campaign. In Vienna, on 25 and 26 November 2013, more than 200 representatives from around 50 European countries will discuss novel and established strategies to combat violence against women, focussing on intersectoral approaches. The conference is organised jointly by the City of Vienna, the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) and the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe (WHO Europe).   According to WHO estimates, one in four women in the WHO European region will experience gender-based violence at some point in their lives. In the EU, nine out of ten victims of intimate partner violence are women. Data compiled by EIGE, however, reveal that support for victims is insufficient with 25.000 shelter places for women survivors missing throughout the EU.   Vienna City Councillors Sandra Frauenberger and Sonja Wehsely, Thérèse Murphy (EIGE) and Isabel Yordi Aguirre (WHO Europe) will present highlights from the conference proceedings at an international press conference, such as data and information compiled by EIGE, WHO and other organisations; experiences and best practices in preventing and addressing violence against women; the involvement of all relevant sectors in policy-making and action; and new frameworks and guidelines for the health sector to effectively respond to violence against women. The press conference will be followed by the raising of the flag of “Terre des Femmes” outside the Vienna City Hall, marking the launch of the global “16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence” campaign.
