Having an academic background in the field of medicine and an extensive medical practice, the couple is well-known in the field of healthcare. In 1973 showing their commitment towards Baba Amte’s believes, they decided to move to Hemalkasa to contribute to Lok Biradari project. The focus of the Lok Biradari project was on empowering tribes like Gondia. The project set up a hospital, a residential school and an orphanage for injured wild animals leading to the upliftment of Hemalkasa and Bhambragad areas on several fronts.  Acknowledging their contribution to the tribal civilization of Gadchiroli and Chhattisgarh, the Indian government honored Mrs and Mr Prakash Amte with the Padmashree. At the international level, the couple was bestowed with the prestigious Magsaysay Award for Community leadership. 

Amte family’s contribution to the society has set a benchmark at the global level.
