As in the US, spirits are generally termed as ‘liquor’, so, often confusion liqueurs are mistaken by liquors and vice versa. One of the primary rule of thumb is, liquors are not sweet, whereas the liqueurs are. The syrupy form of the latter type is also available in the market. Normally, these drinks contain low alcohol and so are preferable mostly amongst ladies. Also known as cordials and schnapps in a few parts of the US, these liqueurs are bottled with different ingredients and flavors. The best thing about these is that a few of their kinds can be consumed like those of aperitif wine. Listed below are some popular types of liqueurs;

  • Cream Liqueurs: Blended with dairy cream, this type of liqueurs are best to be stored in refrigerator. When compared to its other kinds, such alcoholic beverages have shorter lifespan. A few examples of cream liqueurs are Baileys Irish Cream, Saint Brendan and Creme de la Creme Maple Cream. One thing is common in each of these drinks that are their usage of cream and different flavour liquors.
  • Creme Liqueurs: Having a great amount of sugar in it, the crème liqueur is manufactured with a thick syrupy consistency. Here, crème is referred as consistency and not ‘cream’. Unlike the previous type, this drink has no cream ingredients. Creme de cacao, crème de mure and crème de menthe are some of its categories.
  • Chocolate Liqueurs: Those who are Chocó-freaks must try this amazing chocolaty taste alcoholic drink. Such liqueurs are often consumed as after dinner drinks instead an aperitif wine.

  • Nut-Flavoured Liqueurs: Amaretto, Disaronno, Bellota, Peanut Lolita are a few types of nut-flavored liqueurs that are manufactured with varied flavors of nuts. This includes peanut, almonds, pistachio, hazelnuts and green walnuts.
