As part of its on-going expansion, Kingsley Special Academy, a special primary school in Kettering, has invested in a new multi-use modular education building, designed and installed by Portable Building Sales.

The modular school building opened in January for the start of the new term, to cater for a new intake of pupils. A two story multi-use facility, it includes six specially adapted classrooms fitted with disabled toilets and shower facilities, alongside back office areas for staff and a lift.

Thanks to the additional capacity, Kingsley Special Academy can now provide education for more than 110 children aged 3-11 years with a diverse range of special educational needs.

Carol Robinson, School Business Manager of Kingsley Special Academy explains:

“Kingsley is growing fast, and we needed to invest in new facilities to cater for the increasing number of pupils. We’re delighted with our new modular building — it’s a high quality, specialist learning environment that caters for a wide range of needs.

“When looking for a supplier, we wanted a firm with a proven track record in creating specialist education buildings that could provide a full, end-to-end service. Portable Building Sales delivered on all counts, managing everything on our behalf whilst providing a responsive service, well-thought out design and value for money package.”

The new classroom centre was designed to fit in with the established look and feel of the school campus, with a yellow brick and blue steel cladding in keeping with the existing buildings and the school colours.

The building was installed over a two-day period in October — working around the school and pupils to minimise disruption. The cladding and finishing touches were then completed on-site. Portable Building Sales managed the whole process, including design, installation, temporary roads, groundworks and foundations.

Mike Ward, Managing Director of Portable Building Sales, said:

“When creating buildings for special education, we always consider the needs of the pupils throughout the design process — from accessibility, layout and interior features, to the position of windows and the materials used in the building.

In this case, we utilised high level windows, and specified a roof that would minimise the sound of rain and wind, helping to provide a calming, nurturing environment where pupils with a range of specialist needs can flourish.

Modular buildings are ideal for the education environment — they can be installed on site in a matter of days, either on a weekend or over the school holidays to minimise disruption.”
