The United Nations General Assembly proceedings kicked off this morning for the event - MDG Success: accelerating Action and Partnering for impact. Kajol met with Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Director-General of the World Health Organization Margaret Chan amongstother dignitaries and world leaders. Kajol passionately advocated handwashing with soap to Ban Ki Moon and Margaret Chan as a way to catalyse and accelerate progress in the final two years of the MDGs.

“Handwashing with soap must be recognised as a critical policy for accelerating progress towards Millennium Development Goal 4. It is the single most cost-effective intervention to prevent child deaths.Children are dying needlessly but we know how to end it.”

Kajol calls out to the Social Good Summit ‘spread the word toHelp a Child Reach 5’

At the Social Good Summit - one of the landmark sideevents at the United Nations General Assembly attracting global attention through its online amplification - Kajol shared her story of why she became a handwashing ambassador.

“It’s a simple action, but one that can make a real difference. As a mother I couldn’t believe that every day children are dying due to diseases like diarrhoea and pneumonia — one child every 15 second. Diarrhoea is preventable. There is nothing worse as a parent that there is something that you could have done to keep your child safe.”

“Everyone has a role,” Kajol explained. “We all need to raise awareness of how handwashing saves lives.” She asked the audience toshare the film youtube.com/helpachildreach5. “Together we can spread the message worldwide.”

Kajol ended her talk by urging world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly, to “support handwashing as a key intervention in the Post-2015 agenda, because handwashing with soap saves lives.”
