Based on the success of these policies and actions the general public would choose which party to elect in the future. Our current government has been able to introduce many schemes and policies that would benefit the masses of our nation. One of the prominent schemes introduced by the UPA government is the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme which later became an Act known as MNREGA. IBN-Lokmat presentsJanatecha Jahirnama, a show that will throw light on MNREGA enforced by the government. Tune in to IBN-Lokmat this Saturday the 5thof April at 7.30 pm and the following day at 11.30 am. This show of Janatecha Jahirnama is presented by Hero & co presented by AJNARA.

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act was formulated to provide a job guarantee for at least 100 days in rural parts of the country. Through this scheme, all the adult members (at least 18 years of age) of any family in rural part of the country are given non-skilled work.  It was presented by regulation on Aug 25th, 2005. This Act was created with a view to fulfil the fundamental human right, ‘The right to work’. The Act when passed was hailed by the government as the largest and most ambitious social security and public works programme in the world.

According to the Eleventh Five Year Plan (2007—12), the number of Indians living on less than $1 a day, called Below Poverty Line (BPL), was 300 million.India is made up of a mix of urban as well as rural areas. Due to a population of a billion people and a large number of them in the rural areas illiterate, the government faces a major problem in terms of development. People in rural areas have no access to work and this creates conditions of dire poverty and illiteracy. Most of the rural areas in India have no access to good education or technology that can uplift them from conditions of poverty and misery. The introduction of this Act was to help people in rural areas find employment that pays wages to improve their conditions of living. The Act has seen its fair share of achievements as well as struggle.

IBN-Lokmat brings to you live conversations with people on the MNREGA by visiting different regions and talking to the common public about their experience, their take on the MNREGA and how it benefited them.
