IIHS announces ‘Programme for Working Professionals in Urban Development’

An interdisciplinary, full-time, practice-based programme for working professionals interested in addressing complex urban challenges

Patna: The Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) today announced that it is accepting applications for its Programme for Working Professionals in Urban Development (PWP-UD) scheduled to run from September 2013 to August 2014.

The PWP-UD is a unique, inter-disciplinary, practice-based programme that allows participants to build upon their existing disciplinary and practice backgrounds to specialise in urban practice. Taught by a diverse faculty of leading academics and practitioners, it is designed to focus on applied learning and skill development necessary for finding effective, sustainable and integrated solutions to problems facing Indian cities.

Speaking on the relevance of PWP-UD, Chandrashekhar Bhave, Chairperson, Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) said, “By 2050, India will add nearly 300 million new people to its cities in a historic urban transition. This rapid pace of urbanization has placed an enormous strain on urban resources that will both pose a challenge and present an opportunity. Harnessing the potential for this transition demands a new generation of urban professionals who can work across disciplinary and sectoral divides. The PWP-UD is a unique programme for working professionals who wish to strengthen their expertise of the urban. The programme has been specifically designed to educate participants on the planned development and management of our cities as well as develop skills and competencies that will enable them to develop solutions and ideas to complex urbanization problems in Indian society.”

Aromar Revi, Director, IIHS added “The PWP-UD utilises a series of practice modules and immersion visits to facilitate experiential learning that addresses real-world problems in Indian cities. It will also provide opportunities to meet and interact with a diverse range of urban professionals, thought and practice leaders who can provide perspective and assist in making future career choices.”

Participants in the PWP-UD will be taught by a team of well-known academics and researchers, thought and practice leaders deeply rooted in the urban Indian realities. Faculty competencies cover multiple disciplines including governance, land and housing, management, development, poverty, employment, water, environmental services and mobility.

Beginning with a Foundation Term that introduces learners to key concepts, tools, trends and debates within urban development, the PWP-UD’s subsequent terms will include Immersion Visits to key Indian and Asian cities, a 12-week Concentration Term (with tracks in Land & Housing; Water & Environmental Services; and Development, Poverty & Employment),  a 2-month Project Term and an Elective Term which allows learners to take intensive, specific courses in key practice areas. Through this mix of well-planned subjects and terms, the PWP-UD looks at enabling a career shift to urban practice building upon the participant’s own strengths.
